Dear colleagues

We’re pleased to announce that the programme for the Transkribus User Conference
2026 has now been officially finalised: https://tuc.transkribus.org/programme
(https://tuc.transkribus.org/programme)

The TUC 2026 is one of the premier Digital Humanities events in Europe. This
year’s conference (21–23 September 2026) is centred around the theme of “Not all
AI is created equal”, focusing on the balance between general-purpose and
specialised AI in the digital humanities, and exploring how both approaches can
be best utilised to achieve research goals.

From in-depth workshops to enlightening roundtable discussions, the programme
brings together some of the DH community’s most prominent thinkers to discuss
how AI can be best implemented to make historical sources digital and accessible
to all.

Highlights of this year’s conference:

– Navigating „Methodological Hell“: A roundtable discussion on transcription
standards. Our experts will debate whether traditional scholarly consistency
still holds up in an age of automated recognition, or if we need a new framework
for AI-led projects.

– From Cursive to Structured Data: A hands-on look at Smart Extract Models (SEM)
with the Transkribus team. We will discuss how to design schemas that turn messy
handwriting into database-ready resources, and specifically when automated
extraction is (and isn’t) the right choice for a project.

– Citizen Science meets HTR: Mark Bell from the UK National Archives
demonstrates how AI can be combined with citizen science to transcribe large
volumes of documents at an unprecedented speed.
The TUC 2026 will take place from 21–23 September 2026 and is hosted by one of
READ-COOP’s longstanding members, the University of Passau. Located on the
German-Austrian border, Passau is a beautiful city with a rich history, and is
easily accessible from several European cities (Munich 2h, Vienna 2.5h, Prague
4h, Zurich 4h).
